In this two-day workshop students will learn how to construct an iconic pierced tin barn lantern using traditional tools and techniques. Processes taught will include cutting, folding, rolling, soldering and wiring of tin plated sheet iron as well as the laying out and punching of the perforated designs that make these lanterns both durable and fascinating. Some metalworking experience helpful but not necessary.
A life-long maker, Olof Jansson’s interest in tin smithing began with the acquisition of some shears and stakes in the 1990’s. He studied with Walt Fleming of Balston Lake, NY and mentored with Victor Zubatiuk of Cornwall, Ontario. Over the years he has continued to reproduce commissioned items for local historic sites, historic homes, and re-enactors, and is currently developing a new shop space at the historic Kilts Farm in Stone Arabia, New York.
